The premium eyewear manufacturer from Austria raises the bar for sustainability

For 58 years, the Silhouette Group has been a driving force for innovation — including when it comes to environmental protection. This pioneering mindset has enabled the company to operate without restrictions despite its headquarters being located within a water conservation area. How do they do it? A special pipeline carries wastewater from the company’s production while permanently measuring the temperature, pH and volume of the wastewater before discharging it into the local sewage system. In case the water is outside the acceptable limits in any of these key areas, the Silhouette Group can intervene to reduce the environmental impact. Careful use of water and continual wastewater monitoring are only the first step. The company is committed to conserving natural resources in all areas. The company’s eyewear is the lightest in the world. It’s loved by millions for its high quality as well as its extreme durability. Silhouette Group’s sustainable manufacturing philosophy has also earned it a certification under the EU’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), making it the only EMAS-certified eyewear manufacturer.

Sustainability meets technology
As a member of the Austrian Climate Alliance, Silhouette Group is committed to environmentally responsible business practices. In addition to green roof projects, Silhouette Group has installed large-scale solar panels to produce its own electricity. The green roofs keep the buildings cooler while reducing temperature fluctuations, which also extends the lifespan of the rooftop solar panels. It’s a perfect example of nature and technology working hand in hand.

Walking the talk. Worldwide
Since 2008, the family-owned company has been providing funding to an eye outpatient clinic in the north of Burkina Faso along with a group of medical professionals. The aim is to provide local people with the necessary know-how and resources to run the clinic independently in the future.

Silhouette Group is also committed to educational initiatives. It regularly hosts training events for its employees. In addition, Silhouette employees enjoy excellent childcare support. In September 2015, the family-owned company opened Villa RoSiPez, a daycare center that provides childcare for Silhouette employees as well as for employees from two other local companies.
